Just had a reply from LEGO Consumer Services Europe. Who said "All LEGO Sets
are tested thoroughly before production, and we have no previous knowledge
of a similar defect."

I hope that's in the context of some sort of apology.  I've had three Privet
Drive sets with this mistake (presumably a bad batch that ended up at
Argos), a Black Falcon's Fortress with several redundant parts in the bottom
of the box but no string for the drawbridge, a Guarded Inn with a missing
antenna and flowers and a mis-moulded slope in a Naboo Fighter.  Their
quality control is really going downhill of late.

Where I've phoned up, they've been quick to send out replacements.  I'm
waiting to see what the response is like to the web-based form this time.

My reply said:

"We're sorry to hear your new LEGO set 'Escape From Privet Drive' was
incomplete.  Although we do our utmost to avoid this, it can sometimes
occur that a pieces may be missing, especially in larger sets.  I have
today ordered the requested parts and these should arrive with you
within the next 7 to 10 days."

This was in response to the Service form on the website.  The server
e-mailed me back within the hour, but it took over a week for this
handwritten response.  I don't have a problem with that since I only bought
the Privets for parts (and I had the gall to ask for an extra bit or two as
well as my missing parts.  I'll wait and see if I get them), but I'd
recommend using the telephone if someone you know is upset about a missing
piece.

-----Original Message----- (...) Not a very good picture, but clearly shows "non-chrome" parts in a sealed bag. Very definately not incomplete or missing but substituted at the packing plant (URL) (22 years ago, 29-Jan-03, to lugnet.harrypotter, lugnet.loc.uk)
