I'm somewhere between these two, I guess (not that this ever seems to happen to
me). I look to see what's in there first before getting excited. Used lego from
2002 (say) doesn't really excite me that much. Considering that most people's
prices for used Lego are pretty reasonable at those venues, I'd probably end up
buying it anyway. But not necessarily.
Lego from the 80's and 90's, though... that gets me all a-twitter. Heck, even
the late 70's. I'd buy it no problem, no need to haggle-- in fact, depending on
what they're asking, I might even offer to pay them more just because I'd feel
like I was gyping them otherwise.
Stuff from the early 70's and before doesn't do much for me. I've never happened
to wander into a used collection from that timeframe, but if I did, I'd probably
gloss over it and not buy it. I probably wouldn't use those elements in
creations-- I'd just get them for the collector in me. I might get 'em if they
had something really special in there (like those granulate bushes, or original
Automatic Binding Bricks or something), but otherwise probably wouldn't be
interested.
Actually, it's kind of interesting that my interest level drops off so suddenly.
It doesn't follow a bell curve, it's more like:

n | . . . x xxx . .
t | . . . x. . x . .
e |x. . . x . . x. .
r | xx . . x . . x .

s | . xxxxx. . . . xx .
t | . . . . . . .
+-+----+----+----+----+----+----+-

I also wonder how much that has to do with nostalgia value. I grew up wanting
sets that were from the mid 80's, so stuff from the early 80's and late 70's I
want a little less, but I still want a lot because it's *similar* to the types
of things I wanted as a kid. But pre-minifig stuff just doesn't speak to me for
whatever reason.
