Also, something called “Avatar: The Last Airbender”:

Looking for a silver lining to this thing:

An agreement with Nickelodeon grants master construction toy rights to the entire catalog of Nickelodeon properties, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Nickelodeon Movies.

Does this mean we’ll get a You Can’t Do That On Television theme?

Silver lining?

How about possible new parts, new minifig torsos, and parts in the newer colors?

Each new set adds new possibilities in building.

I don’t WANT new parts. I’d like existing parts in more colors and larger quantities. A Jack Stone-scale SpongeBob figure doesn’t open up a lot of building possibilities for me. Or are the SpongeBob or Airbender figs in minifig scale? Don’t be afraid to let us all in on the secret!

Don’t know. After all, I’m only an AFOL that does a fanzine:-)

Actually, I really don’t know. While you might want to beleive that there is a network of spies arrayed out concerning LEGO products, you would be wrong. If there is one, then I’m not in it.

There’s nothing paranoid about acknowledging the fact that TLC gives out advance info to selected sources (FBTB, LEGOFan, etc.). You just sounded like you knew something, and since you do run Brickjournal, it seemed plausible that you might have recieved some interesting information that you might like to share.

If by “newer colors”, you mean dark blue, dark red, etc. - wouldn’t they show up in any new sets? Even new sets that weren’t based on another mindless license? But maybe you mean totally NEW “newer colors” (flip-flop medium lime?)? If so, you have more knowledge of TLC’s plans than we do; feel free to share!

Don’t know about that either - that kind of information is too precise. As for showing up in new sets, maybe, maybe not. Didn’t dark red first show up in a licensed set? Didn’t UCS show up in a license first? I wouldn’t be so quick to judge.

We don’t need any more colors - we have too many already. Even TLC acknowledges this, and is supposedly cutting the palette down. Of course, they were supposed to be doing less licensing, too...

Children are curious, creative and imaginative. They embrace discovery and wonder, they are natural learners. These are precious qualities that should be nurtured and stimulated throughout life.

Sound familiar? That’s one of TLC’s fundamental beliefs. Please explain to us how sets based on yet another license puts that belief into practice.

They use a licensed vehicle to stimulate discovery...let’s make a new home for Spongebob. Let’s make a spaceship, etc.

You could say that about ANY license, or any potential theme for that matter. I think that sets like those in the Designer theme that don’t come with a pre-defined storyline do more to stimulate creativity than a cartoon tie-in.

“Hey, let’s switch SpongeBob’s and Patrick’s heads!” Creativity... what a joke.

Well, creativity isn’t something that can be turned on and off at will, at least initially. It takes some exploration and first steps. I see these sets as one of those steps for the target market.

Creativity is not a joke, it’s something that needs to be grown. My building skills didn’t happen overnight, and I’m sure that you took some time to get to the level you are.

Yes, but I wasn’t given GI Joe LEGO sets when I was 7. I got things like this, which encouraged me to think for myself.

Bring on Hasbro (see Lenny’s comment). At least they could turn a profit.

If LEGO can bring in more people to the hobby and building through these licenses, more power to them! That will mean a profit, and more sets and parts all around!

And TLG did quite well with Star Wars, and that theme got a lot of people back into building, like me!

It hasn’t meant a profit yet. And what would be so bad about Hasbro running the LEGO brand? At this point, all it would just mean different licenses.
