Eric Strand, who is helping me with the Lego CD (he's becoming a Samsonite
expert) recently discovered some heretofore unknown Town Plan sets from the
1960's.
The king of all 1960's sets was the Town Plan set with Town Plan board. In the
USA/Canada they had Samsonite Lego #725 Town Plan (1961-65). In Britain they
had a British version of #810 Town Plan (1963-66). In continental Europe (but
not sold in Germany or Austria) was the continental European #810 Town Plan
(1960-65). These 3 sets constituted the entire Town Plan set lineup.... until
now.
Eric discovered a very obscure #842 Town Plan set that was sold by Samsonite as
a 1969 Sears catalog item. This was a set not listed in any Samsonite Lego
catalog of the time. It is in a sense similar to the old USA Target Store
Orange Pumpkin buckets of the late 90's. Only sold thru one retailer.
This unknown #842 set was sold (like most retailer catalog sets of the Samsonite
era) in a plain brown cardboard box with the set number and the word "LEGO"
printed in several areas on the box (but not in full color). And like many
Samsonite sets of the late 60's, the set number was also the set parts count
number. So the outside of the box was unadorned, it had a Town Plan board (in
this instance it appears to NOT be available separately).
Also, in Britain it appears that at the end of their Town Plan production run in
1966, they either had a bunch of #810 British Town Plan sets left over, or (and
I think this is more likely) they had a large quantity of the British Town Plan
contents left over (including the board) and put them into a set which also
included a Lego motor (never seen in any Town Plan set before). So in 1967,
they had a British Kellogg's Corn Flakes special promotional advertisement.
They where they were giving away 2250 of these sets.
Both of these advertisements can be seen in Eric Strand's Brickshelf site:

Just more stuff to add to the Lego CD.
Thanks alot Eric :-)

| (...) ...SNIP... Hi Gary, very nice new infos :-) But I was a little confused on the picture of the town plan board: (...) By comparing it with the 60th town plan board in the early 60th catalogues (set no. 200) it seems to have a different (...) (20 years ago, 19-Oct-04, to lugnet.general)
