Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) I think he's saying that if you want fleshtoned figures that have some of the other features you ask for, maybe Playmobil may suit your needs better. I'm not sure I agree. but I am also not sure I think that changing from yellow to fleshtones (...) (21 years ago, 2-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, FTX)

(...) Minifigs are one of the huge appeal of Lego, at least to people from my generation. (The first sets I had had the armless variety.) Mucking with that doesn't seem like a great idea to me either. (21 years ago, 2-Feb-04, to lugnet.general)

Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) I've had mixed feelings about this, but now I am prepared to welcome the changes. While I love yellow minifigs, I believe having the chance to see skin-toned figures will enhance the realism of the LEGO line. -Tim (21 years ago, 2-Feb-04, to lugnet.general)

Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) At this point, I think I'd rather see the line get partially Simpsonized. Mixing yellow with Caucasian or Oriental fleshtones would just look stupid, but Lando has pretty effectively opened the door for at least having brown as a second (...) (21 years ago, 2-Feb-04, to lugnet.general)

Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) I question the need to "enhance" the realism. The Lego world is its *own* very special and unique realism. Changing the minifigs to be more like exact models of the real world rather than abstract (and well-recognized!) representations is a (...) (...) What if it meant more sales and wider appeal? (...) But TLC is already moving in that direction! Take facial expressions on the minifigs. I think these enhance playability (and apparently so does TLC) over a ubiquitous classic smiley. You are (...) (21 years ago, 2-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego, FTX)

Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) You mean that if there is a competitor with minifigs being 'more human', children would choose it just for that? In such case everybody would play with Ken & Barbie (pun intended). (...) Oh my. The grins (you call that 'facial expression') are (...) (21 years ago, 2-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)

Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) Ahhh, but Pandora's box has been opened, and going back is not possible. And frankly, I think it was cowardice to remain "neutral" WRT the racial issue. They simply chose to stick their collective heads in the sand. Look at the figs in the (...) (21 years ago, 3-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, FTX)

(...) Why is going back not possible? If DUPLO can be revived, so can yellow figs (...) We may need to agree to disagree. I know I've taught my children well when they tell me who their friends are without referring to skin color. In an ideal world, (...) (21 years ago, 3-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, FTX)

(...) I've always liked Steve Bliss's idea from 1998 or so: (URL) (As you can see from my reply there. *grin*) But I don't think they're going to do that. (21 years ago, 3-Feb-04, to lugnet.general)

(...) Out of curiosity, does anyone suppose that TLG's decision to move toward flesh tones might have been, at least in part, motivated by the fact that successful competitor brands have been marketing flesh-toned figures for years? This, coupled (...) (21 years ago, 3-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego, FTX)

Re: New Skin Tones coming? (was: Re: Scans from new danish 2004 catalog)

(...) Well, I would assume this-- what else would motivate change? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" (and, of course, it's cheaper to do nothing), and perhaps the concept of all yellow figs isn't necessarily "broke", but perhaps profits are. Perhaps (...) I have followed this thread and now I want to add my thoughts, for what they are worth. I really like yellow. When I think of a minifig I think of a yellow face. I have, however, been quick to accept the new facial expressions and choose those above (...) (21 years ago, 5-Feb-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego, FTX)
