Was the lid  still able to 'lock on' with the 137?

IIRC, yes-- I might have been able to squeeze in a few more if it was "barely
on".

What pattern are you using to fit 137 in?

I layed them in with studs facing sideways, stacked on their short ends (so the
edge it's laying on is the 2-stud wide, 1 brick tall face). I stacked them in
columns (between 2 and maybe 9? per stack?), and layed the columns down to about
4 (MAYBE 5?) columns per "level" of the cup. I stacked... uh... I forget how
many levels high. Maybe 4 or 5?, each level being something like this when
viewed from above:

    .  .
. [_][_] .
[_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_][_]
[_][_][_][_]
   [_][_]

Each stack is free-floating (not attached to adjacent stacks), and placed to lay
flush with the level beneath it.

I'm not sure offhand how many actual bricks fit per level (it increased with cup
width), but that's the general layout I used, using single bricks to fill in
here and there when space allowed. At the top, I just sorta laid the bricks
differently-- possibly even studs up, though I'm not sure.

IIRC I didn't have to force and jam pieces in so that the cup bent at all, but
some stacks obviously fit pretty snugly, and even created very minor oddities
like sloping towards one side of the cup in the center.

(...) I'll repeat the information here that I sent to Mark P. in a private e-mail. The lid definitely locks on there with all 137 2x4's inside and more. My "secret" is that some of the layers can be wider than 8 studs, allowing a 2-stud gap in the (...) (21 years ago, 7-Nov-03, to lugnet.general)

I can fit 124 2x4's into the large container with the top locking on, and i can fit 140 with the top just placed on top and looking like it fits (but not locking). What pattern are you using to (...)
