I'll append that I also found I could squeeze in 137 2x4's (exactly the same
number Chris came out with-- I was thankful!) into a large cup,

Was the lid  still able to 'lock on' with the 137?

IIRC, yes-- I might have been able to squeeze in a few more if it was "barely
on".

What pattern are you using to fit 137 in?

I'll repeat the information here that I sent to Mark P. in a private e-mail.

The lid definitely locks on there with all 137 2x4's inside and more.  My
"secret" is that some of the layers can be wider than 8 studs, allowing a
2-stud gap in the middle that, when combined with other discs of the same
size can hold a few extra 2x4's in a vertical orientation.  And you can
stack an extra 3 2x4's and put them into the stud on the lid.

Here's my pattern:  (Sorry for the bad ASCII art!)  In this map, the tildes
"~" represent no brick, 4 identical digits in a row indicate a 2x4 brick on
its side, and 2 identical digits indicate a 2x4 brick on end.  The top
layer, being only 2 studs deep, cannot hold 2x4s vertically, so I usually
fill the leftover 2x2 spaces with 1x2s or whatever else catches my eye.

Starting at the bottom of the barrel:

4 studs high:
~111122~
33334444
55556666
77778888
99990000
~112222~  (Total 22 2x4 bricks)

4 stud high:

33334444
55556666
77778888
99990000
11112222
~334444~  (Total: 26 2x4 bricks)

9999001111
~22223333~
~44445555~
~~~6666~~~  (Total: 30 2x4 bricks)
4 studs high:
~22223333~
4444556666
7777889999
0000112222
3333445555
6666778888
~99990000~
~~~1111~~~   (Total: 37 2x4 bricks)

2 studs high:
~~~~1111~~~~
~~22223333~~
~4444556666~
777788889999
000011112222
333344445555
~6666778888~
~~99990000~~
~~~~1111~~~~   (Total: 19 2x4 bricks plus 2 extra 2x2 bricks or equivalent)

2 studs high:  (placed in the stud in the lid)
1111
2222
3333   (Total: 3 bricks)

Grand Total:  22+26+30+37+19+3 == 137 2x4 bricks (<thunder>  Ah, ah, aahhh!
137 Vonderful Bricks!!! </thunder>)

A couple of notes:
1.  It definitely pays NOT to try to make this all in one big blob, because
the layers don't align neatly on brick boundaries as they get taller.  I've
found that no chunk should be taller than 4 studs when laying on its side.
2.  As you place each disc in the cup, pack small pieces around the edges
before placing the next larger disc on top.
3.  If you really want to pack 'em in, you can add a couple of plates here
and there at the "top" of each 4-stud disc.  ("Top" when the disc is lying
on its side.)
4.  If you do this with plate, be sure you own a couple brick separators for
when you try to unpack it!

Hope this helps.

- Chris.

I can show you how to easily get 136-2x4's, 1-2x2, 21-1x4's and 18-2x2's in and get the lid to snap shut! (URL) I'm sure with a little work you could get another 2x4 in there in place of something else but this pattern is easy to build. If total (...) (21 years ago, 7-Nov-03, to lugnet.general)
