In the "real world" outside of us LEGO enthusiasts, "leaks" are almost
always pieces of information that are deliberately distributed outside the
intended audience.
The "leaks" discussed on LUGNET are really more like "seepage", i.e.,
information that inadvertantly gets into the hands of people (i.e., we LEGO
enthusiasts) who are more interested in it than those who were intended to
distribute or receive it.
Nearly all of the so called leaks I have seen on LUGNET are about upcoming
product. Customers who see a more enticing product coming down the line will
wait for it and not buy something they want less now. That's (a little bit)
bad for LEGO, good for the customer. It's a lot like posting a negative
review: Some potential customers will not buy that product and perhaps
choose something else instead. It's also like posting information about
clearances: the retailer who isn't discounting loses some sales to those who
are.
