Hum... Hum... Hum...
Does this not go against the core idea of 'lego imagination'?
Sure all the products described below would be great for both disney and
lego fans but does that NOT defeat the purpose of having a cild imagaine and
build his own version of say the tinker bell castle? Perhaps exapnding and
making extra parts (via bulks or other wise) more affortable is a better way
to go.
You see as soon as you stamp the lego/diseny logo on a box that IS limiting
the IMAGINATION of a child. let me explain a bit.
a) you buy a child an wild wild west set and that child will most likely
start imaging other scence/sets he can build that are in that time-frame.
Being them wagons, forts, indian house, etc... You the child has a big
imaginable world to play in. This is good.
b) you buy a child a star wars set (say x-wing). Now the imagainzation
world is a bit more limited not becuase the 'world' is smaller but becauce
he is not going to imagine or create is OWN version of tie fighter to go up
against his x-wing. Why should he, he can go get a TIE. The world of sw is
big but the child will beging to focus only on what he can see in other
store sets. He won't dream of making a sw-ike car that flys you he?
Probabaly not since it's not star warish... (well perhaps after seeing EP2
he might). But you undersatnd the point his mindset is getting focuses on a
limited imagainary world.
now you do a disney set, say the tinker bell castle? first is child had NOT
gone to disney he has no clue what the castle looks liek ro what else is
around the castle so he can't mold anything else. Next, okay he builds the
castle (being that the real one is a shell) what is he going to build in the
sindes of it? If you make it playable, then I will be a challenge to make it
lok like the castle. Next their is NOT much room for imagination.
Tinkerbell flys and uses magic? Hum.. How do you model that in lego? Okay
perhaps you can image that you are peterpan or a frind of peterpan and you
and peter pan and tinkerbell live in the castle. Is THIS PLAYING with
legos? ro is this using legos to play out stories? I'm not sure what lego
wnats to focus on but from all the years of having legos I've always seen
them as lego is a object that I can use to build and image strcutures that I
will never have. (a catsel on the forsest, a train, a space ship, etc...)

That WORD 'collectors' SCARES ME. LEGO up until the Star Wars License has
been wise enough to stay true to the TOY INDUSTRY and be a TOY MAKIER! That
is every toy they make is garrantteed (for some amount of time) to be
avaliable for ALL! Everyone will get the same thing and their is NO fear of
missing out. When star wars came out I was afraid that LEGO would trun into
HASBRO/KENNER and release the toys but the secondary market (comic books
stoire) would buy them all up and resell them at a high price. Take the
star ware action figure line form kenner/hasbro. Sure hasbro has made some
great figuers like Grand Admiral Thrawn. But when they release them they
gave few to many areas. Those areas that did get them one or two poeple
would buy them all up and they you had to get them at double/triple cost at
the comic book store. This IS NOT FAIR! Luckly, with lego sw THIS HAS NOT
happened.
I was initally dissapointed with the SantaFe engine as it was limited to
10,000 units but after they release the 2nd batch which did not have the #
plate I'm okay with it. LEGO IS A TOY! LEGO IS A TOY! I want to be able
to have the same advantage as everyone else is getting LEGO TOYS. Going
into the 'collectors' market and the above statement changes....

Diseny has a TOY MONORAIL so I'm not sure how well that idea is going to go....

| (...) Not any more than having a town set or a vehicle set defeating the purpose of a child imagining his own version of those. Making sets more affordable is a good idea tho. The Disney sets were pretty expensive. (...) I dunno about that (...) (22 years ago, 1-Jun-02, to lugnet.general)
