I think Black....
In the very earliest days of plastic Lego bricks, only Red and White pieces
were produced. Eventually, more colors were introduced and it seems that Lego
is now introuducing new colors every year. Do we really need Sand Red and
Sand Blue????? I would prefer Light Blue and Medium Blue instead.
But over the life span of Lego sets, I would have to say Black is likely to be
the number 1 most used color. When was the last time you bought a set that
did not have any Black pieces in it??? Little Black pieces are everywhere, no
matter what the main color scheme of a set is.
Black definitely wins if you count each and every rubber tyre.....
Red would likely win if you count each and every wheel....
other thoughts:
--Space has never used many Yellow pieces.
--Castle has never used much White (until Ninja).
--Green has always been rare until Star Wars (except plants & baseplates).
--Basic/Universal/Freestyle sets did not have much Black, and Gray pieces were
absent except for certain specialty pieces like propellors and hinges.
-- If you count minifig heads and hands separately, that gives you a lot of
Yellow pieces.
--Minifig accessories account for the largest portion of Brown.
--Of the newer colors, Dark Gray and Tan get more use than Brown.
