This is a good start. Some suggestions for modifying the results:

1. Look at only a few common parts, especially bricks. I've acquired
hundreds of 1x2 plates with clips from recent sets. While these are common,
they are tiny. I'd rather know how many of each 1x2 turn up.

I have noticed more gray bricks than anything else in recent *system* sets
(outside of bulk.) I was surprised how many grey bricks are in the Enchanted
Island set, and hardly any other colors. Dan's numbers brought this to mind.

2. Obviously the Statue of Liberty set skewed your number of sand-green. We
can ignore sand-green. However it cries out for some estimate of set frequency.

The simplest thing I can think of is to use set size. For instance, suppose
a 100 piece set sells four copies for every 400 piece set. I think it is
true that dozens of $6 sets sell for every $80 set.

Assuming all themes were equally popular, you could weight each set's
contribution by 1/N where N is the number of parts in it.

Thinking about more detailed approaches makes my head hurt. There are too
many unknowns, starting with how many years a set was available.

Of course the ultra rare big sets still end up equally weighted with super
popular big sets.

(...) nod, good points. Ways I might want to modify the results... * make it proportional to the number of people that own a set - i.e. by set popularity. * or, by 1/N, where N is the number of parts in a set * by year, recent sets count more * 1/P, (...) (...) see (...) well, interesting question :) So I ran a script on all the inventories on peeron (note, this is only stuff we have inventoried, so only about 1000 sets out of more than 4500)... There's some weird things at the bottom, which I'd say (...) (23 years ago, 15-Dec-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.build) !
