I've seen this with both new and old Minifigs.  It seems inevitable if you swap
arms too much.  I can't say that I've ever had one (including the new SW
minifigs) crack on a first swap, though.

I try to avoid it by ripping the arms out of my minifigs' sockets in as gentle
a way as I can, with slow and steady pressure.
