I came here to LUG to talk about it, but the observations were made while
watching some of the "high volume" net auctions. I realize it is a circular
arguement (why do people in a buy/sell forum buy and sell), but it was just • a
question of the inate number of MISB sets I see up for auction/sale. I did • not
intend to infer anything about the membership of LUG (ie. thier
collecting/playing habits), it just seemed the logical place to ask the
initial question.

Actually, it will be interesting to look at the market a year from now.
Right now, there is (was) a wide variety of older MISB sets available for
MSRP or less. Many of these are being put on the auction block (by AFOLs
feeding their habit, and by others just out to make a buck). I think these
sources are going to be drastically reduced by next year. Places like Busy
Bee and DYA have to be clearing out the European distribution channels and
in most populated areas, there's got to be someone scouring the stores for
old sets.

Of course we also have clearance season, and brand new set season, so there
are also lots of recent MISB sets on the block (this factor will continue,
though I predict a reduced amount of clearance LEGO in the coming years).

Of course, because of the surety of what you're buying, even someone buying
to build will be willing to pay a bit more for MISB than used.

I wonder if one can determine how many people are buying for MISB
collections. I bet a lot of the Star Wars sets being sold on eBay are going
into collections of this sort.

(...) Very astute obs... the Fitness Programme of TLG/C is providing us a once in a lifetime opportunity. I expect never again to see this many older sets surface in such a short span of time. I mean, 300 blue hoppers? Who'd have thought? (25 years ago, 27-Jan-00, to lugnet.general)
