Volunteers: They are just that--volunteers. They graciously give of their time, and (usually) are not expecting recompense for that time. They should not be expected to cover any expenses in addition to their registration and food/lodging. (It’s a nice touch when they can get a lunch or dinner, or something special to say “thanks” for the time they put in.)

On that I don’t think I agree. I think that volunteers (of sufficient involvement) should be given free registration. If you are volunteering then you have to attend and it is thus an expense. In the event of a loss then I imagine those same volunteers would typically be the first to ‘pass the hat’ to help offset costs.

Not sure I agree there either - speaking as an organiser of Brickvention, all the organisers, helpers, presenters, etc paid registration, it meant the difference between a small loss and a large loss. Even our Australian LEGO Ambassador paid his registration fee ;)

Granted, Brickvention is considerably smaller than either Brickvention or Brickworld, but I have no problem asking volunteers to pay their own way. After all, aren’t all attendees “volunteers” really? I mean, they choose to bring their MOCs (sometimes large amounts and long distances), just to get together with other AFOLs, and provide a spectacle that (hopefully) the public will find interesting enough to pay to see.
