Volunteers: They are just that--volunteers. They graciously give of their time, and (usually) are not expecting recompense for that time. They should not be expected to cover any expenses in addition to their registration and food/lodging. (It’s a nice touch when they can get a lunch or dinner, or something special to say “thanks” for the time they put in.)

On that I don’t think I agree. I think that volunteers (of sufficient involvement) should be given free registration. If you are volunteering then you have to attend and it is thus an expense. In the event of a loss then I imagine those same volunteers would typically be the first to ‘pass the hat’ to help offset costs.

Don’t forget that volunteers are also taking a risk that their enjoyment of the event will be diminished by their responsibilities.

Of course there are no hard and fast rules and I’m certainly not going to tell people how to run an event. Just putting a slightly different view out there.

Tim

(...) Tommy: Here, here! I agree. Everyone else: Here's where I boldly go where I probably shouldn't. Conventions cost money. There is money to pay for licensing fees, building usage, etc. If there is a profit, it (usually) does not go into the (...) (18 years ago, 15-Mar-07, to lugnet.events.brickfest, FTX)
