Samurai engaged in personal duels for honor, rather than marching forward
shields locked. And "strict adherence" and "think" is an oxymoron. :-)
On the other hand, I'd trust 'em to go where they were told and do what they
were ordered to do more than the other armies.

Yup, strike from behind in the dark. Unfortunately, the stricture was a
gigantic battelfield. Kinda useless there.

Their big advantage was a powerful bow that they could use from horseback. But
they aren't going to stand up to european cav in a charge. At the same time,
they could fill a wider variety of roles.

It was hard to tumble a Euro-Knight since their high front-and-back saddles
held them in place rather well. The only way they would be helpless on their
back is from complete exhaustion (one reason why they rode a horse).

A sword is a secondary weapon usually in european armies. Bow, pike, spear,
halbard, lance, bill, and glaive were the primary weapons.

Weaponless in mass combat? Where do you want 'em buried? :-)

The big advantage of samurai was that they could stand and pincushion you with
arrows, or melee. Great tactical flexiblity with the training to handle
either.
