And not only that (but related), there probably is a good • reason to have an
extras.dat file to codify the extra elements that come with a • set (things
like extra 1x1 round plates, extra visors, extra skeleton • arms, etc. -- all
of these are pre-planned by TLG (except extra cloth capes and • extra
stickers, which are production accidents)).

And have you made a list of all those extra pieces, Todd? You
can't expect
people to do that on their own if all they have is the
instructions.
Personally I don't like the idea because it really has nothing
to do with
building the model.


But it has everything to do with inventorying the parts in a set, which is
another plus of the LDraw file, and one of the values of creating the official
set repository.  Obviously, not everyone who submits a model will be able to
list extra parts.  Even if they have the actual set, but bought it at auction,
they wouldn't necessarily have the extras.  But for those who do have such
knowledge, it would be simple enough to include it.
