As Niels indicated, the 4 x 12 x 3 1/3 versions are openable with a screwdriver, allowing the actual motors to be replaced, so I think the term "Shortcut" is correct. The actual motors (both 12V and 4.5V) were sold seperately as replacement packs, so users can screw open the case and replace the motor (either replacing a broken motor or replace a 4.5V motor with a 12V motor or vice versa).
