Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

How about just minifig gun musket minifig gun pistol minifig gun revolver and minifig gun rifle (24 years ago, 10-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

OK, I've done DAT files for three of the four firearms that LegoCo produces for Lego minifigs (the pirate pistol, the pirate musket, and the wild west revolver), and I still have questions on how we should name these weapons. Both the wild west guns (...) (24 years ago, 10-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

(...) *either* the "Pirate Musket Pistol" *or* the "Wild West Pistol Revolver"... You *don't* know for *certain* just by looking at that name... (Continued below.) (...) By using "modern" and "archaic", there would be *no* ambiguity: an *archaic* (...) (24 years ago, 11-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) I'm fairly happy with keeping the names short, and introducing longer names when (if) it becomes necessary.   Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) Isn't "Musket Pistol" an oxymoron? Why not just name them Minifig Flintlock Pistol Minifig Flintlock Musket Minifig Revolver eric (24 years ago, 11-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) Hmm. Possibly. I thought a "musket" was a gun with a belled/flared muzzle (among other characteristics). Typical usage is for long-barrelled weapons. (...) I guess I'd be OK with that. Steve (24 years ago, 12-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) Not all muskets have a belled muzzle. Civil War era muskets were non-belled, making them much more accurate. I believe "musket" refers to muzzle loading, as a butt loading rifle was known as a carbine. Sorry, I'm a stickler for history. -John (...) (24 years ago, 12-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) Which wouldn't explain an arquebus, the muzzle-loading precursor to the musket. I believe the difference between the two when both were used was that the musket had a longer barrel and fired a heavier ball (armor could be "proof" against an (...) (24 years ago, 12-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) Just as a casual LDraw user, I appreciate the effort to disambiguate the names by including "Archaic" vs. "Modern," but then again it wouldn't be obvious to me what "Archaic" meant and what "Modern" meant. If "Modern" applied to the Wild West (...) (24 years ago, 16-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) [sigh]... You've got a point. "modern" w/ respect to History != "modern" in mundane usage (...) Sorry, but once again, this opens up confusion. Which one of these is the pirate pistol? Which one is the pirate long-gun? (You see, not all (...) (24 years ago, 16-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) IMHO, the disadvantages of "Pirate" and "WW" outweigh the disadvantages of "Modern" and "Archaic"... But I like best what Steve Bliss suggested most recently. --Todd (24 years ago, 20-Jul-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: question on naming - pirate guns vs. modern guns

(...) Since Franklin and Todd have weighed in on this, I'll assume the matter is settled. Not to slight anyone else's opinion, but Franklin is the author (well, I haven't seen a rifle.dat yet (hint, hint)), and I've got a lot of respect for Todd on (...)
