I played with the QuickTime tools and my converter last night. The process goes
like this:

Process a DAT file with LTrans.pl (my program) to get a .3dmf file (8k)
Use 3D Movie Maker on that to get a .mov file (8k)

At this point you have a QuickTime movie wrapper around a 3D object.

If you want to go with QuickTime VR (more compatible)

Use QD3DtoQTVRObject on the .3dmf -- you get a .3dmf.mov which is a plain
sequence of images. (8.7 mb!!!!!)
Use QTVR Edit Object on that and save it -- you've got a QTVR object. (8.7mb!)

Obviously, no compression at all is being done on the images here for QTVR. If
you don't need top views there might be an appropriate choice you can make in
QTVR Edit Object to trim those.

My LTrans.pl still has many bugs (mostly in lighting, surface normal flips).
All these other tools can be found in the QuickTime Tools set and there is a
link to that on my LTrans.pl page.

I have written a straight-to-QuickTime converter for DAT files. I don't know
about making a QTVR file, but, it makes a 3DMF file which you convert in 1 • step
to a MOOV. The movie rotates the model in realtime in any QuickTime player. I
am pretty sure there are utilities to make a QTVR panorama from that.

Thanks, Erik!

I'll look into the conversion to QTVR.  The only way I've done it is by feeding
the QTVR Builder an image matrix of individual frames, but it only stands to
reason that QTVR can convert from a QT movie... but then, since when did
*anything* on the Mac make any sense ;-P

Thanks!

I am currently in the process of doing a total rebuild of the Pallas Spaceworks
site.  Stay Tuned for announcements of the Grand Re-opening of Pallas
Spaceworks.
