As the site templates begin to take shape, we need to begin organizing
volunteers for various aspects of the site. This is the current status of
various site areas:
1. Multilanguage Support - Group Leader Jacob Sparre Andersen (Danish
translation)
- Volunteer - Jean-Pierre Paris (French translation)
We still need people to translate the site and interface into German and
Spanish. Translation will commence when English pages are complete on a per-
page basis.
2. TLG Model Repository - Currently No Group Leader
The model repository will be hosted in the lugnet.cad.dat.* heirarchy, and
needs to be organized and regulated by two to three volunteers. I reccommend
Todd for leader on this area since he has the best knowledge of the LUGNET
server and can definitely be responsible for this area. Volunteers here need
to work with me on working these models into the website for display. I don't
expect to get to this site area for a couple weeks.
In the mean time, volunteers in this area can gather already made TLG models
and review them and either approve, correct, or reject them for submission
into the database. The models gathered should be organized within the
lugnet.cad.dat.* heirarchy.
A model repository can be created to host unofficial MOC creations if authors
desire them to be made available there. I'll leave this one up for discussion.
3. Download - Currently No Group Leader
The download section should provide easy downloads and instructions for LDraw,
the original JJ updates and parts packages, the L-CAD parts updates including
newer versions of Makelist, and unofficial add-ons and utilities for
generating parts, file formats, etc.
First off, a comprehensive list of LDraw-related programs and updates should
be gathered with URL of site hosted at, file, and name and email address of
each respective creator. Second, these creators need to be contacted for
permission to use their software on the download pages.
The download pages should take the effect of download.com style pages with
program info, a summary, links to the creator's site, release notes, and the
file for download. The creator of each program should be able to write a
couple paragraph summary for these pages. Their release notes should be
included on the page or in the download, however it was originally packaged.
Perhaps a form and CGI should be made for this area so authors can fill it out
with information for their program and it goes into an automatically generated
page. IMO the files to be downloaded should all be hosted at ldraw.org and
the links for those downloads will be manually added before each page goes
online.
The download area should be searchable for keywords and program names, as well
as cleanly indexed.
4. FAQ - Currently No Group Leader
The existing LDraw FAQ should be reformatted to fit the look and feel of
ldraw.org and also clarified where necessary (I haven't looked at it, maybe
the text is fine, but just a suggestion).
5. Reference - Currently No Group Leader
The reference section should contain tutorials on various aspects of LDraw and
LEdit, and their various unofficial utilities. A perfect example of this is
Bram's tutorial, which from my best recollection of what he said can't be
moved yet. That is fine.
People volunteering for this position should write tutorials for these
programs. You should be an experienced user or perhaps the author. There's
not much to say about this part, except it would be nice to have tutorials so
new users can lear easier.
You can email me and begin writing now in a text editor if you like, or in a
generic HTML page with screenshots and I'll take your work and format it to
ldraw.org later.
6. Memorial
We need a couple people to work with the existing Memorial and move it over to
ldraw.org. Some of the beginning pages can be rewritten to tell of James'
work and what has happened with James' work since his passing as well. We can
give a fresh face to this area that holds a special place in our hearts.
The other site areas are Discussion, Links, Legal, and Credits, which I can
pretty much handle with the possible help of someone who knows lawyer-speak.
Discussion will just be an ldraw.org-ized introduction to lugnet.cad.*
heirarchy and links to the LUGNET groups web interface, mail and post setups,
and links to view the groups in an NNTP newsreader.
Please, please, please send comments and suggestions! Followups set to
lugnet.cad.dev.
If you would like to volunteer for one of these areas, please email me at
tim@zacktron.com - Thanks!!
Keep Building!!
