I disagree because the dat and ldr extensions do not indicate the type of
content in the file (except that it's an LDraw file).

hmm ... I always understod .ldr as scene file and .dat just for parts. at least
this was what I thought reding from tim's post back in 2001:

http://news.lugnet.com/cad/?n=6850
"The extension change is just that.  Nothing changes in the actual file
format.  It allows an LDraw model file to be distinctive from other files"

What can I say?  Tim has always been focused sharply on models.  Although he
used "model" extensively throughout that post, any implication of having
separate definitions of "part" vs "model" as file-types is inaccurate.

"> Are we going to change all the Parts files and Primitives ?
No, for now parts stay .DAT."

That was entirely for practical purposes.  That is, there are too many issues of
effort, tracking, backwards compatibility (both in existing files and existing
software) to rename all the files in the parts library.

I imagine if we ever
break backwards compatibility in the part library, we'll switch all the files
to .LDR extensions.

as far as I remember with already broke backwards compatibility with LDraw
0.something:
http://news.lugnet.com/cad/?n=12351

"Backwards compatibility" (BC) is neither a boolean value nor a monolithic
entity.  There are levels, types, variations, and flavors of BC.

Doing "RENAME *.dat *.ldr" on the parts library would be a huge BC issue -- it
would cause every single existing LDraw content file (that uses the parts
library in any way) to no longer render correctly.

When we decided to remove the restriction on dithered colors in part files, we
broke a small kind of backwards compatibility, to a certain extent.  That is,
edges, triangles and quadrilaterals coded with a dithered color (which should
only happen in patterns) will not render correctly in LDraw.  How many models
will this affect?  And how badly will it affect them?  Obviously, not many --
the problem only occurs in LDraw/LEdit, the models will still be highly
recognizable, only a few areas will be drawn with incorrect colors.
