Often the number remains the same across relatively minor variations.
Sometimes even across major variations.

Sort of, but there's another potential primitive lurking about, that is
even more useful, to provide good modeling. This is a box section, where
the box meets the tubes. I've named this primitive box6.dat, and I've
included a version of the DUPLO 2x4 which uses it (see below).
The effects of this primitive are slight, you'd have to view at high
magnification to notice the difference. But there is a difference, and
this allows one to (relatively) easily model this detail.
The only changes I made to Tony's 3001_d.dat are:
1. Adding references to box6.dat.
2. Deleting edge lines that are superceded by box6.dat.
It might still be useful to make another version of box3#8.dat, with edges
on one end. Or maybe just make an outline primitive, with the three edge
lines that could be used with box3#8.dat.
I'm posting this in MPD format, and including the studdu2.dat and
studdu4.dat files, to make it easier to view from the web. If you don't
have an MPD-capable viewer, let me know, and I'll repost just the parts.
