I find that *.ldr and *.mpd belong together as the future extensions.

For me it's the kind of file - while mpd contains multiple models, ldr and
dat contain only one file (I thought it's more logical ???). But I'm always
open to discussions :-)

Maybe our views are biased from the actual handling of the file types in
our applications?

MLCad has an "Active model" droplist and lets you switch
between model/submodels.

L3Lab always displays the complete model.

Whether a model has its submodels (or a part its subfiles) in one file (mpd)
or in several files (ldr/dat) is to me just a matter of which storage
technique the author has chosen.

We both ignore the extension anyway and determine the actual file type
ourselves from the file contents, so I don't see the point in making
the user bother to choose between ldr/dat and mpd?

Therefore these 3 lines should be enough:
LDraw Models (*.ldr, *.mpd)              (the default)
All LDraw Files (*.ldr, *.mpd, *.dat)    (for backward compatibility)
   All Files (*.*)
/Lars

(...) How about just using .ldr? Otherwise you Windows folks are going to have to fight it out with Microsoft for the .mpd extension, and we already know who'll win that battle. :) Microsoft registers .mpd for Microsoft Project Documents.
