Maybe our views are biased from the actual handling of the file types in
our applications?
MLCad has an "Active model" droplist and lets you switch
between model/submodels.
L3Lab always displays the complete model.
Whether a model has its submodels (or a part its subfiles) in one file (mpd)
or in several files (ldr/dat) is to me just a matter of which storage
technique the author has chosen.
We both ignore the extension anyway and determine the actual file type
ourselves from the file contents, so I don't see the point in making
the user bother to choose between ldr/dat and mpd?
Therefore these 3 lines should be enough:
LDraw Models (*.ldr, *.mpd) (the default)
All LDraw Files (*.ldr, *.mpd, *.dat) (for backward compatibility)
All Files (*.*)
/Lars
