So what can I do to resolve this, and have a single editor which
supports both Modelers and Authors?

Speaking as someone who would only ever use it as a modeler, I'm
wondering why one program has to be all things to both groups?

Because I belong to both groups, and I'd rather use one program than two.

More importantly, there is significant overlap in the functionality--all the
moves, rotates, color change, etc. applies equally to modeling and authoring.
The big problem is that authoring requires direct access to the text, and
modeling is better being hands-off on the text.

I know you're doing this gratis, and I understand that two separate
programs would probably mean twice as many e-mails, questions to
answer, etc, but it sounds like you're concerned about settling for
"almost there" on two sides.

No, I want "exactly there" for both.  If it's possible.  I might settle for
99% there.  But I tend to be a 1%'er, so maybe 99% isn't good enough.

5. Provide two different windows for the editor, one for modeling and
one for authoring.  Both can be displayed and used at the same time,
whichever window has the focus is the active one.

Hmmmm.  Interesting.

Yeah, I'd have to think this option through a bit more, before deciding if it
is worth pursuing or not.

6. Give it up, and have two different editors, LDAO Modeler and LDAO
Author.

Well, I started responding before I read the whole thing, obviously.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that.

If I do go with separate-but-equal editors, at least now I have names for both
of them.
