Those kind of overlaps can cause very ugly artifacts during rendering, so
imho saving a couple of bytes (on harddrives containing 1.000.000.000.000
bytes these days!) is not worth it.

I've never really understood that either.  Okay, my first computer came with a
16GB hard drive, so yeah, space was pretty cramped then.  My second computer
came with a 100GB hard drive, but even after I bought that I was still seeing
people getting all tied up in a knot over how large an LDraw part file was vs.
how large they thought it should be.  Currently, I've got a netbook with a 16GB
SSD (the circle is complete!), and I keep my LDraw stuff stored on a 32GB SD
card.  My entire LDraw library, including both parts and models, only uses up
about 223MB.  At this rate, that SD card should crumble to dust before I need to
worry about running out of space, provided people don't start intentionally
bloating their part files by doing stuff like coding the entire part instead of
using primitives and such.
