True, Battletech uses the assault classification.  However, to me, assault
implies something that is bulky, relatively slow, and generally loaded with
weapons.

...Ive always thought of the word assault as a charge or initial
attack, so by that term, an assault mecha would be fairly fast,
preferably lightly armed in preference to heavily armoured with the
idea being to get to the enemy intact as fast as possible to hold them
while support and main line mecha come up.

That would be more of a fast attack/light assault mecha.  Assault Mecha would
have heavier armor, more powerfun weapons, and a slower rate of fire, thereby
moving slower.
Macross/Robotech Valkyries would probably fall into the light assault category
(with the armored versions falling into medium assault category).  The Gundams
in Gundam would probably fall into Heavy Assault, even though they are fast and
manueverable.

Look at the Stormbringer on my site to see what prompted my question about
sizes.

...Hmmmm... That brings back the term 'Whoa nelly!'... seeing the pic
of scales, it reminds me of the imperial assault on hoth :-)

Wouldn't that then mean that it is an assault mech?  ;)  (Actually, I'd call it
Very Heavy Assault, but that's just me. :) )

P.S.  These are just my opinions.  I have formed these after years of playing
various strategy games and talking with people who really like mecha combat.
