The first anime based show I remember watching was Star
Blazers/Battleship Yamato (Though I don't remember mecha, per se.)
Later I discovered Robotech and devoured every episode. Then I found
Battletech, which at the time I thought was just another division of
Robotech, since I recognized many of the mechs. (At the time [I was
about 12] I thought Battletech must refer to non-tansforming mecha and
Robotech refered to veritechs. It wasn't until years later when I was
introduced to the Battletech RPG that I realized the difference.)
Strangely, though, I didn't really start building mecha until the last
three years or so. I attempted a veritech in my early teens a couple of
times, but mostly I used to build wheeled vehicles and
spacecraft/airplanes. I think therefore that while my more recent
exposure to things like M.D. Geist and Bubblegum Crisis stimulated me to
build mecha, influence for the actual models comes more from the older
stuff. </ramble>
