I was just wondering what anime/manga everyone here is most inspired by when
making their own creations.
Mecha wise my first big attraction was Robotech, but I had seen (and
liked Starblazers years before).  I also watched much Battle of the
Planets and Voltron (liked the lion series better).

Robotech, man!  :-,  Then Go-Bots and Transformers (blech now), and Battletech
later, though since early Battletech stole mucho from Robotech (which in turn
stole mucho from Macross and Mospeda) I feel I can't really count that.
Well my understanding from the past is:   Robotech is a blend of three
different Japanese series including Macross and Mospeda that were cut
dubbed and maybe a little bit fresh animation thrown in to bridge
things a bit.  So it isn't really a rip off of Macross its a
derivative of it.  Unfortunately I don't have any factual evidence to
back this up.  I do remember that at one point the was a "Perfect
Collection" series that had both the Robotech episodes and the
original japanese origin series episodes (subbed) for sale but I never
got any.

I also got a kick out of Voltron, esp. the one which assembled from 15 other
vehicles.  But I never really drew any inspiration from that.

As a kid, I absolutely inhaled Star Blazers (i.e. Starship Yamoto) and Battle
of the Planets (?).  Inspector Gadget fit somewhere in there too, but I'm
almost too ashamed to admit that.  :-,

Today, I'm still drawing lots of inspiration from Macross and Ghost in the
Shell.  A lot of Dark Horse comics -- e.g. almost anything in the Aliens
series -- have some really cool vehicles as well.
Ghost in the Shell, I love that film!  That's the game that clenched
the decision to buy my Playstation :^)

Personally, Gundam first started me in the idea of
making Lego Mecha

Personally, I can't see why Gundam is so popular.  I haven't seen the show
(and I suspect that this accounts for a lot), but the all the mecha look
so...ornamented.  Lotsa exciting curves and stuff, but otherwise kinda
vapid-looking.  The mecha in Macross, OTOH, look more functional.  But then
again, I've watched Macross, but not Gundam.
I have only seen one Gundam episode so far, not bad, dated (animation
wise) but not bad.  Of course I comparing it to things like GITS so
the comparison probably is not fair :^)

IMHO, Macross is *much* better in terms of story line and characterization
than Robotech.  Even with subtitles, I found it to be much more entertaining. • See above for why :^)

(I will now apologize for the non-LEGOness of the post, but its still
mecha topical :^)

All other themes are just spare parts for Castle!
