Hi Anne,
I have a few suggestions for you.
1. Start small. Leave the 2 foot long masterpiece till later and build
smaller simpler things for now. They can be small versions of the
whatever-it-is you want to build 2 feet long <g>.
2. Know what you're trying to build. It's usually much easier to build
something you know well, like Larry with his trains. If you don't know
the subject you're building, intimately, then find references: use
books, pictures, movies, whatever but have something to look at. I can
build houses out of my head, but have to go look at pictures to build
vehicles.
3. Think through the structural requirements before you start (I do this
in bed when I ought to be asleep <g>) and do "proof of concept" pieces
before you build the main model. I built a 30" long "event space" after
Xmas with 2-storey galleries down each side, and before I got really
started I built the support structure for the galleries at ground level
so I knew all the beams would join properly and the flooring pieces
would be properly supported.
4. If something doesn't work right as you're building, take it apart and
try a different way. The wonder of Lego is it's so easy to rip it back
and start over.
5. Roof building tip: smallish roofs don't need extra support inside but
it's awkward to build the last few layers without collapsing everything
when you apply pressure to the bricks. I like to build my buildings on
the thin baseplates, and when you're at the roofing stage it's easy to
turn the whole thing upside down, peel the baseplate off, and support
the roof with your hand from inside as you finish the last few layers.
Then you can re-attach the baseplate if you want, or leave it off.

| Good tips. I can't emphasise enough the power of doing design studies. Bits and pieces that you can work from after you're happy. In fact, building, then copying and improving with the other one in front of you, if you have enough pieces, is a GREAT (...) (26 years ago, 6-Mar-99, to lugnet.build)

| Hi all, I'm new to lego world, I never had them as a child but have gotten heavily into them lately. I really enjoy building my sets but now I'm looking to build my own things. Upon doing so I found out that I have a deficiency. I seem to have a lot (...) (26 years ago, 6-Mar-99, to lugnet.build)
