Hi all,

I'm new to lego world, I never had them as a child but have gotten heavily
into them lately.

Welcome to the obsessio....er, hobby.  Lego building as an adult can be
very rewarding.

I really enjoy building my sets but now I'm looking to
build my own things.

I enjoy building the sets too.  I think you can learn a lot by building
the sets.  Something I'm just starting to try is building the sets just
by looking at the completed model instead of building step-by-step.
Also, trying the alternate models makes you think about HOW something is
built more than following the step-by-step instructions.

Upon doing so I found out that I have a deficiency.  I
seem to have a lot of problems thinking in 3D.  So I end up making a facade
instead of a building, or unstable creations.  Does anybody have any hints or
tips for this?

Well, I made some graph paper for myself in a paint program.  I designed
the grids 6/5 height-to-width ratio to match the brick's geometry.  This
helps a lot for building curved shapes.  Also, drawing different views
of an object helps - say top and side view.  I want to take a technical
drawing course because they teach you drawing multi-views, etc. and I
think this would really be helpful.  Designing in 3-D is easy for some
people and hard for others.  It's VERY hard for me, but I think anyone
can learn it.

I suppose this sounds strange, but all my life I've been more into 2D things,
drawing, photography, etc.

Thanks for the help,
Anne

Good luck.  There are a lot of us on this group who are just starting
out like yourself.  I have been collecting Lego for years, but I have
only done rudimentary original building.  It's probably the most
challenging aspect of this hobby.
