Tom's tips are great.
I suggest starting slowly. Like drawing still life, start with simple,
manageable projects. Build one room houses, simple trucks and planes.
Things no bigger than 2 handfulls.
My father taught me to build with wood by making me build boxes. Think
of things as a set of boxes stuck together.
Next complicate the creation a little. Add windows and doors to the
box. Integrate interior walls, etc. The great thing about LEGO is that
it is easy to take apart and put back together.
Lastly for now, check out people's web pages. Many people put the URLs
at the end of their posts. Go to a search engine and type in "cool
lego site of the week." This is one of my favorite sites. I peruse it
for inspiration. For awe. For fun and joy.
It takes time to get to know the pieces and what they can do and how
to combine things.
I like buying a set. Building the model in the instructions to get a
feel for the pieces and then using no other pieces, take the whole
thing apart and seeing what else I can build. Some of the worst
instructed sets have some of the most potential. Exploriens theme is
my favorite for this.
