and transmission. Actually, there's a 6th for dashboard and seats
(not too great).

Correction: Pathetic. IMO, pieces with holes alone do make a
construction "Technic", when there's neither form nor function.
It all looks awful and consists of 90% angle beams.

...and the dashboard does not connect at all to the steering
wheel mounting, which is very rickety - not helped by the fact that
the steering wheel doesn't accept a whole stud's worth of axle.

The transmission makes a surprising amount of noise, some
of which seems to come from the engine friction - the engine
turns in little stick/jump/stick/... steps, corresponding
to piston travel/rest times (worsened by much flashing
at the bottom of the cylinder insides), and the slack in the
tranny catches/releases the resulting friction all the time,
making all that noise. (You can still feel the piston travel
when pushing the car.)
Of course this is mostly a function of the engine design, and
in the 8880 was simply overshadowed by the CV joint tube
friction.
If among all the pointless new technic pieces, e.g. the Slizer
nonsense, they had made a piece that allowed for a realistic
45-degree offset in the crankshaft (the grey crank piece with
the axle shortened to 0.5 would do), the engine would be
a bit smoother - since they didn't, it would help to
do it with a normal grey crank, and spanning the extra length
with a beam as a center bearing, which would also
help crankshaft rigidity - I've been thinking about adding
3 to make for a proper 5-bearing crank, though this will
take a total of 5 grey cranks.
BTW, I just realized recently that in the old square-piston
engines, LG models always used the (now gone) extra cross-holes
in the z24 gear to mount the 4-axles that hold the piston rods.
Apart from 4-cyl. boxers or smaller engines, I've always
used the round holes, which, while requiring a balancing axle
with z8s to keep the inner z24s from twirling away (call it
a camshaft), makes for proper 45-degree offsets w/o extra length,
as well as a slightly shorter stroke.
