Cool!  Can you give some details as to how the front suspension works?

They cunningly used the old upper/lower arms and 1/2 stud shorter
tie rods to create the same old toe change with suspension travel,
but for two reasons (smaller knuckle, and then vertical small
springs) this change is limited by the very limited suspension
travel. ("Cunning" like Baldrick in Blackadder - "I've a cunning
plan, sir...")

There's actually nothing new in the parts used for the suspension, in fact
all the parts used in it are available in previous Technics sets (mostly the
8880 Supercar). It only uses one spring unit per wheel (as distinct from 2
springs per wheel in 8880).

These are the new stronger small springs.
The steering knuckles are new; they work the same way as the 8865 parts,
providing a normal axle hole, but the ball for the tie rod is closer
to the axle and the top/bottom balls are on 2 stud centers rather
than 4. Nice and compact, but limiting suspension travel.
The way the spring is placed between the arms, only 3-axles with stud
can be used for the wheel.

But it's FAR from disappointing!
There are new type instructions - the car is built in stages from seperate
modules and each module comes packed and sealed in it's own small sub-box,
i.e box2 - front suspension, box3 - rear suspension, box7 - dashboard, etc.
I think this is a VERY GOOD THING - no more hunting through 1,400 pieces to
get the part you're looking for.....

Very helpful - but the modularity suggested by this isn't quite there,
which is a pity. E.g. a real car has a one-box removeable tranny, which
would be really nice in this model for tinkering with.

It doesn't seem to be quite as large overall as 8880, but what's not there
in quantity is certainly there in quality.

I think it may be a bit larger. There's less in the chassis, but
more (by count, not by mass or usefulness) in the body, but the increase
in quantity is outdone by the decrease in quality.

The rear suspension is the usual 4-universal-joints-with-matching-control-
arms deal, but with very short suspension travel, and using
tons of 1x1 and 1x2-2hole technic beams and friction pegs and
half beams/lift arms.

The 5+R tranny is nicely done, with a (new) extender to move the reverse
gear's dark-grey gear out of reach of the others, but within reach of the
locking tube.

The tranny uses 3:5 gearing; rather than z24/z40, it uses the new
"round" 12 and 20 gears, which look like 12-tooth bevel gears back-
to-back with regular thick teeth in the middle, so that they mesh
with each other straight and at 90 degrees, as well as straight with
regular gears (at 1/4 stud distances).
And, as opposed to the single-piece shift plate surmised from
the early pictures, they made a 6-H plate from 2 SpaceShuttle-style
half Hs and 2 1x2s.
It looks like removing the reverse gear extender and putting that
dk-grey gear in the standard position will make it a 6-speed
instantly.

Condition of parts: They don't stink, so I guess they weren't made
here. Rather a bit of flashing, lots of surface variation; the huge
(and hollow-behind-the-walls) box had several holes/tears from
shipping; the manuals have some non-cut pages and arrived somewhat
crinkled. Worst of all, several wheels have "curb damage" >:(

All in all, not bad (really: a nice chassis that needs some tinkering,
with the silliest body yet), with a good separation line between
chassis and body. I'd really like to be able to buy just the 5 chassis
boxes and the wheels.

(...) But there doesn't seem to be that many parts involved in the red body, anyway, so you can simply buy 5 8448's to achieve the same thing, right? :-) Thanks for the review of the 8448, it was very interesting to read. I think the "modularity" (...) (25 years ago, 4-Aug-99, to lugnet.build)

This discussion of the 8880 and 8448 Super Cars has been great. I don't own either yet, and find it difficult to decide between buying the older 8880 at auction or the 8448 new. For those familiar with both, if you had choose between one or the (...) (25 years ago, 7-Aug-99, to lugnet.build)
