So 6-wide for trains is the standard because, well, it’s what LEGO builds in. But it’s not even close to “true” minifig scale. An easy rule of thumb for scale is one stud equals one foot (but of course that is merely an estimate).

Here is where you get into the fat minifigs vs short minifigs debate. I like to assume my figs are about six foot tall and built like John Candy. As such 5 studs = 6’. Of course I build most of my cars four-wide but I freely admit they’re not scale models.

So, using that, let’s look at a car I fancy--such as the Lexus SC430 hardtop convertable. It’s just under 15 feet long (14.8333) and exactly 6 feet wide. Compare this to my car, which is about 16 studs long (15 not including bumpers...) and 6 studs wide.

Or five-wide and 12 long.

Now, since 6-wide is the minimum possible width to fit two minifigs side-by-side, it’s a convenient number for cars--and it happens to be in scale, as well. So while smaller cars may look cute, they certainly aren’t what anyone should consider a realistic scale.

Unless you assume your minifigs are fat. Have you ever seen two 200 pound people sitting side-by-side in a car? Of course my scale begs the questions: what do minifigs eat to get so fat.

Anyway, I have a weird thing for numbers and scales and had to weigh in here. Of course anyone treating Lego as a scalable medium is a very strange fellow since no matter what scale you use something is always going to look wrong. I’ll stick to my cutesy little compressed buggers and be done with it (apart from the occassional swipe at my eight-wide train building friends and their giant, oversized beasts).

I believe that traditionally I’m meant to make a mom joke now but instead I’ll just say I rather like the car and to go really back on-topic I like the new installments of the Brick Testemant too.

Tim

(...) That's kind of a startling image, to think that all my LEGO characters, from Adam & Eve to Jesus to GW Bush have all had John Candy proportions, but in some ways it seems right too. Actually, the strange thing about the minifig's girth is that (...) (18 years ago, 19-Jul-06, to lugnet.build, FTX)

It all boils down to two things: The fact that the dimensions on a minifig are (...) (18 years ago, 19-Jul-06, to lugnet.build.ancient, lugnet.build, lugnet.town, FTX)
