Off and on for the past week I've been building a table for my Lego room:

Basic info: The total table area is 48"x48".  There's a building area of 30"x40"
with area on two sides of it for either part sorting or for easy availability of
parts being used in the project of the moment.

The tabletop is set on two bases of 2x2s set in 15"x30" rectangles.  I made it
in two bases because otherwise I wouldn't be able to move the bases in and out
of that room.  The exact size of the bases was determined by my drawer sets (14
3/4" wide).  The 2x2s are joined by 1x4s top and near-bottom; screws are set in
the 1x4s to mount the drawer units.

The building area is actually 2 pieces of 20x30" 1/4"-thick plywood which can
lift off...

for additional storage or sorting area.  That 2x4 in the middle of the open area
is not fixed in place; when sorting it can be set aside.

Why 20x30"?  It's two baseplates by three baseplates, a standard MichLUG block,
and the plywood can be used to transport creations to shows.  Held out
horizontally, it also fits through the door to that room and around the corners
of my house nicely.

The area underneath the table is open for storage... I didn't mount that last
storage unit (the only one I have that's wider and shorter) to leave  access to
the space.  I may eventually put shelf supports in there.

The two bases are joined by a pair of 5/16s bolts.  The tabletop itself lifts
off from the bases and is held in place by dowel-pins.

Fit and finish could definitely be better... I'm no Steve Ringe (who designed
and built MichLUG's tables), but the table is highly functional, at least for
me.

(...) Clearly the optimum table size and construction depends a lot on how you sort and store you LEGO and what you build. Although we once again have lots of our standard club tables in handy sizes like 30 x 60 and 30 x 30 so we can set up as many (...) (20 years ago, 29-Dec-04, to lugnet.storage, FTX)

(...) Looks nice and useful. I'm going to have to build some display and build tables for my lego room soon, so it's nice to see what others have done to get ideas. I had forgotten that you use those dixie bowls for sorting. I like them because (...) (20 years ago, 29-Dec-04, to lugnet.storage, FTX)
