If you have mtr, run it to some systems out there (like yahoo.com or
gerf.org)

Nothing **horrible**....192.168.1.4 is obvious configured to not respond.
Traceroute is useful too.
Slashdot mention a big midwest fibre was chopped last week, I wonder if it
happened again.
