Isn't .tri likely to be misread as the Triangle (even with .rtp present)?
Does the Triad have any other names?

I'm starting really to lean toward this (creating statewide groups) for the
reasons you've outlined in this thread and also for consistency reasons in
the new website reorg. My only concern is complaints that I can't as-yet
anticipate or predict. (I guess that's good.) Overall, I think there have
been 5 or 6 requests for state-wide groups (Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina,
and perhaps California and New York) with no stated worries (pun intended :)
of the new group being too much to keep track of, since people generally
seem to want the statewide groups as an alternative to where they currently
post, rather than in addition.

Yeah, that's a problem. But the loc groups have been very poorly
"advertised" since the system's inception. I've learned recently of several
people who have been using the system for a long time and who didn't even
know about the loc groups.
The loc groups will soon be featured much more prominently, which will
hopefully greatly reduce the trickle-problem. A lot of the trickles, BTW,
seem to be "hey, anyone else here?" posts -- I'm glad those stay around
forever because someone just joining on now in March '99 can see one of
those posts from someone who joined on in October '98 and posted that.
