OKAY: Lets try this again. Please highlight this on LUGNET!!!
|
Um, I hate to be picky, but for future reference...
|
Um, is the sarcasm really necessary?
|
Wow, I hope you didnt take genuine offense at that. My apologies if so. I
seriously want trying to be sarcastic or anything-- Im not really even that
annoyed that you asked that it be highlighted. I just wanted to point out that
highlighting probably isnt (IMHO) the way to go, since Id prefer not to see
local LUG meetings filling up the sidebar. I added that first bit because I
didnt want to sound like I was giving you a dictate, because, clearly, Im in
no position to do so.
|
David: I guess you have no problem with anyone else promoting their private
enterprises -- AuctionBrick for instance -- and for that matter, other local
LUG events, such as, say, the NW BrickCon contests? Didnt realize that
NYCLUG was so, um, threatening to you.
|
Well, Im all for these events being highlighted when theyre applicable to the
more general Lugnet population. AuctionBrick is clearly something that everyone
might be interested in, and NWBrickCon is something that everyones invited to.
Ditto BrickFest, BrickFest PDX, etc. From what I could see, this looks like its
really only applicable to people in the NYC area.
When its pictures from an event or a meeting, its of more general interest
since everyone can check out pictures of cool MOCs, etc. Same thing if someone
had some sort of cool idea or story or whatnot at a meeting that other people
might be interested in hearing.
Again, as I said, I dont know if theres something special going on at the
meeting; maybe youre doing something that really IS of general interest and I
dont know about it, but to read what you posted it seemed more like something
to let people in the area know about the meeting, and less like something that
appeals to the more general LUGNET audience.
|
Ill be honest: NYCLUG is a relatively new creature in the LUG world, and
were trying to maximize exposure for it. Highlighting seems to do the
trick. Once we get more members, well crawl back into our little hole and
never bother you again. ;-)
|
If youre announcing or promoting a new club, thats actually perfectly fine in
my book-- Its the more mundane meeting announcements Id like to avoid. Id
hate to see the sidebar populated by LUG meeting announcements. I dont know how
frequently they happen throughout the world, but in NELUG we have them about
every month. So with 30+ LUGs around the world (rough guess), itd make for
quite a lot of posts.
|
As for the why should the rest of us care? argument -- you can say the same
thing about any other post. Think every single AFOL wants to argue about
colors? Youd think so by reading the Top Stories, eh?
|
Thats another reason I posted to admin.general-- I know its been discussed
before (and recently with the color debate and BrickLink store closings), but
having skip filter settings for the top stories would be pretty keen, and would
vastly help things like this. Obviously theres people that WANT to read the
color debate, etc, and those that adamantly DONT. Keeping LUGNET tailored a bit
more to what you want would definitely help.
Hmmm... how about if you could give automatic spotlights to people or
newsgroups you like? Thatd be pretty neat as well-- I know Ive missed stuff
thats been posted to my local area groups since we usually post to our NELUG
mailing list. Might help to have an automatic hey, check this out! on the
website (I know you can sorta do the same thing with subscribing via email to
certain NGs, but bleah-- I hate getting MORE email).
Anyway, its certainly not on the high priority list for Lugnet, but it would be
pretty cool.
|
Hoping this ends the argument. Lets all be Lego friends. :-)
|
Heck, Im sorry you thought it was an argument to begin with! Who knows, if
youre in the NYC area, youre actually not terribly far from us up here in
NELUG-- maybe well have some crossover events sometime :)
