Whoops, I meant lugnet.loc.us.ny.ny

Sure, OK. But isn't all of Long Island (and Yonkers) still part of NYC in
the same sense that San Jose is part of San Francisco?
They're just satellite cities 1/10 or less the size of the larger city,
yes? That is, Long Island and Yonkers are truly part of the "Greater New
York City metropolitan area" (aren't they)?
It's like Cary, NC is to Raleigh, or Golden Valley, MN is to Minneapolis/
St. Paul, or Cambridge, MA is to Boston, or Schaumburg is to Chicago...if
ever there were newsgroups for these cities, they wouldn't be listed as:
lugnet.loc.us.nc.car
lugnet.loc.us.mn.glv
lugnet.loc.us.ma.cam
lugnet.loc.us.il.sch
but they -would- be listed as:
lugnet.loc.us.nc.ral.car
lugnet.loc.us.mn.msp.glv
lugnet.loc.us.ma.bos.cam
lugnet.loc.us.il.chi.sch
In fact, I'd be hard pressed to list Superior, Wisconsin under Wisconsin
if it ever were spun off into its own group. It would likely go beneath
Duluth in the hierarchy -- as lugnet.loc.us.mn.dul.sup -- because
Superior, Wisconsin is much more a part of Duluth than it is a part of
Wisconsin. Superior happens to be a satellite city of Duluth, which just
happens to be technically in Minnesota.
If you think that's anomalous, have a look again at Kansas City. :)
It's one group for both Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas --
but it's listed only under Missouri
lugnet.loc.us.mo.kan
because Missouri is where most of it and its metropolitan area are. (It
would be silly to have two separate groups, one for each state. :)

| (...) BTW, Arlington, Virginia is (almost) to Washington, D.C. what Superior is to Duluth. So why is Arlington listed as lugnet.loc.us.va.arl and not as lugnet.loc.us.dc.arl? Well, even though a gazillion people work in D.C. and live in Arlington, (...) (26 years ago, 26-Mar-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

| (...) It appears that you are dealing with a geographic/population spoke. If that is is the case, then you could consider Yonkers as part of the Metro NYC area. I'm not convinced about Long Island. Most Long Islanders have never set foot in (...) (26 years ago, 26-Mar-99, to lugnet.admin.general)
