"Shifty" rip off brand -- can they get away with this??

I was glancing thru a dollar-shop in lower-mainland British Columbia, Canada, a couple days ago when I saw some small LEGO sets for sale, the kind that usually go for $4 or $5 US. They were being sold for only $1 a piece; they had a set of a couple (...) (25 years ago, 25-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands)

(...) Apart from the printing, and the copy-right issues, how were the elements themselves? Did they compare in quality to Mega Bloks, or Best-Lock? Can you actually use them well with LEGO elements? I'd be very interested to see some of these, or (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands)

(...) Not really. We (Maria & I) are both avid builders, and one reason to go to Canada was to take advantage of the exchange rate, and find some good deals in Mega Bloks. The in-laws on both sides think we're a couple of weirdos, but they do agree (...) (25 years ago, 26-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

"Shifty" rip off brand -- more info from original poster

Sorry I didn't provide more information right off, but this was my first post to the LEGO-related newsgroups so I wasn't aware exactly what was expected. I just ran across this stuff in the store and thought it might be something worth letting (...) (25 years ago, 27-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands)

  Shifty Blocks

I was able to find just one of the Shifty block sets, in a Dollar store in the small town of Drumheller, AB. I looked in several other such stores in Calgary, but came up empty. The set is an incredibly brazen rip-off of the Royal King LEGO set. The (...) (25 years ago, 30-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands)

  New MegaBloks sightings in Canada

I just got back from my honeymoon trip to BC and Alberta. We made some good finds. Zellers had marked down some of the "Creature Seekers" sets, so we got what amounted to a 50% discount over the US prices on "Supersonic Mission" and "Scuba Quest". (...) (...) Yep, I've seen those too. The name on the box is rather appropriate: "SHIFTY".
