  Re: Strengthening Gears

Plastic doesn't get stronger under heat-treatment. This type of heat treatment is used to control the crystallization of metals, and long-chain polymers like plastic just don't behave like that. If you need stronger gears, double them. It is the (...) (23 years ago, 5-Mar-02, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Bi*nicle folks went away?

Do what you can. I think, however, that making one the same size, to fit in the same package, using parts that you approve of as "real technic" is not only possible, but would be a good way to show LEGO how it "should have been". --Jack Gregory (...) (23 years ago, 19-Mar-02, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: I need a Propeller

Well, if model airplane props were for moving air, then every house fan would have one. Prop design is based on efficiency, not quantity of air moved. And the RPM environment, power available, fluid type, etc... None of the LEGO props are very good (...) (25 years ago, 23-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Gear backlash

Well, the standard way on worm drives is to load the end of the worm with a spring, so there is always contact on one "side" of the worm. Similar things can be done for spur gears, but they all involve loading the meshed teeth in one direction with (...) (25 years ago, 18-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Need Balls!

I am coaching a team in the FLL contest. I need a supply of those 5 or 6 nub diameter foam balls -- at least 30. Does anyone have an idea of a source? Is there any similar thing that comes from Nerf? How many balls come with the RoboSports expansion (...) (25 years ago, 20-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: A load of balls

I checked out the Nerf balls that are about the same size as the LEGO ones, but they are much denser and harder. I was surprised. They probably shoot much better than the super light foam ones, though. I got a wicked pile of Ping Pong balls that are (...) (25 years ago, 23-Oct-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Mindstorms in New York Times

I figure LEGO must owe you about a million dollars. Getting this kind of publicity before Christmas in the New York Times is worth a ton of money. But not at all to take away from your acheivement. You earned the recognition. But tell us: how did (...) (23 years ago, 11-Oct-01, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

Re: Need Advice on Getting Started

Conrad, hands down, don't hesitate to get a "real" RIS set. Really. You will be disappointed with any other, and you won't be with the RIS. You should be able to find it on sale. I heard of them going for $130 at BestBuy near here, and this was the (...) (23 years ago, 24-Dec-01, to lugnet.robotics)

  New hinge/joint element?

Check out (URL) some of its links. The pictures are not quite good enough to see how the thing is made, but it appears the ankles, knees and elbows are made of the same joint. It looks like a trapped ball with through-axle. --Jack Gregory (23 years ago, 6-Feb-02, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: 1.5 Upgrade -how?

Well, I want to check out the 1.5 software (may have to use it for FLL next year), and don't really have another choice. The price isn't a problem, it is the fact that while it says "24 Hours", you get completely different companies depending on (...) (25 years ago, 12-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  2000 Technic in WalMart

I was amazed to see a Battle Droid at Walmart today, just lying on a shelf. Looked like a lot of 2000 stuff was there, but there was only one droid. Usually the LEGO aisle at Walmart is fairly picked over this close to Christmas, but it was well (...) (25 years ago, 22-Dec-99, to lugnet.technic)

  DSDK's at CompUSA

I scored six Dark Side Developer Kits at CompUSA this AM (Braintree, MA, USA) at $19.99 per. Several were beat up and opened, and I haven't checked them yet. Not the $4.88 they were supposedly going for in some parts a couple weeks back, but a far (...) (23 years ago, 17-Dec-01, to lugnet.market.shopping)

  Great LEGO SAH catalog supplement

Today we (in Massachusetts, USA) received the special SAH catalog featuring the new SW stuff (and the old stuff). It is a tour-de-force in marketing.   Re: awsome gear table

I don't know about the first link mentioned, but this one (sjbaker) is incomplete in the sense that it is possible to create legitimate 1/2 stud spacing, and I think, with some further trickery, 1/2 brick vertical spacing. This would produce a (...) (23 years ago, 3-Nov-01, to lugnet.technic)
