TRU probably did it, just because KB and everyone else was doing it, not to be creative on their own. As these coupons are used (and somewhat abused), I think we will see fewer and fewer of them. I picked up the 20x4 LCD at bgmicro, and it works fine. I have pcode for 20x2 successfully running, simply by re-compiling with the LCD_COLS set to 20.
