Some theories: How big are the thumbnails? If they are still pretty big that will slow things down. A thumbnail should be no more than 20K or so, especially if you have scads of them. A Lego testing machine for Lego compressors... wow, one of the coolest Lego things ever seen around! I love the idea and love your implementation, and find your results very useful. I don't know, I can see them and I have a serious astigatism, I can also see the magic eye ones they had out a few years ago.. just takes a little time sometimes and being able to cross your eyes easily.
