(...) I, too, find that I just can't make pieces connect in LDD like they're supposed to. When this happens, I'll build up part of the model in LDD and then save as a .LDR file. Then using MLCAD (in LDraw), I fix the stuff that didn't work in LDD (...) (20 years ago, 25-Oct-06, to lugnet.cad.ldd)

(...) The buildings are a Blacksmith's forge kit and another one built as a mirror image! This is the old trick of using a decent kit to fill in a gap. I did the same with wagons - notice the 6 Octan tankers in the middle, just in front of the (...) (20 years ago, 25-Oct-06, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

(...) You might consider using the LEGO magnet bricks (URL). They've got a good mass to them, and they're two studs wide.
