I, too, find that I just can't make pieces connect in LDD like they're supposed
to. When this happens, I'll build up part of the model in LDD and then save as
a .LDR file. Then using MLCAD (in LDraw), I fix the stuff that didn't work in
LDD and, if I want to order it from Factory, bring the model back to LDD and
clean it up. There are some glitches in this process - certain things (colors,
pieces) don't carry well between LDD and MLCAD, but it at least allows accurate
piece placement.
