Wow, love the cool fighter (er, the one right below the big ship's

Well, I love this set. Matt M. is right up my alley in terms of this ship, I
must have built and destroyed this pacticular ship hundreds of times. It is
one of the only LEGO sets in my recollection that could be an actual
spaceship, in terms of space, of no holes in the body, etc. It is a first
rate design, one that, IMHO, that LEGO has not made in a long time, outside
of a few SW ships and the like.

But it's so UGLY! Look at the nose, with all those width changes! (I know
that there's no air in space, so the shape doesn't matter, but still!)

Well that's why you try to make it better. :) Mine is actually a modified
CFV, the nose is a lot different (bottom of it needs work though), and I tried
to be more consistent in going from smaller to larger, but now looking at my
overhead I see where I need to make it a bit more round in the front middle
section, and perhaps wider and the front rear section. I've always been of
the opinion that Lego has some nice ideas (this being one of my favorites) but
all of Legos ideas can be improved upon. You know the little ship on the
bottom of my page? That's a modified 6894 Blacktron Invader, modified again
and again to where it looks a lot better, but that's where the idea came
from. Actually though not all of my ship designs come from Lego, the Falcon
is actually modeled after the E-vac in Aliens, at least the front end.
Personally what I thought was REALLY ugly about the original CFV was the
colors...ick...but that's just me. :)

The shape means nothing in space. I think this is one of the more realistic
(As far as real goes for LEGO models, that is) that they have made. I think
it is a complex nose, that while may not be the prettiest, it certainly does
have protection for the pilot. I love all the slopes in this set. This would
be a great set for parts! : )
To each his own, Alan. This is one of the few models that I have changed
slightly. I think the insectoids main ship or that awful Explorien ship is
UGLY, but usable for parts. I am a big fan of the classic Space ships, this
one is, IMHO, a continuation of it, and a worthy addition.

With a bit of modification on the nose, it wouldn't be so bad.

I'm with Scott (and others) on this one. After discovering the CFV just a few
months ago (it appeared at the start of my Dark Ages), I totally lucked into
trading for one -- for which I'm still incredibly grateful -- and it's a
fantastic set. I actually like the colour scheme (it photographs well,
dontchaknow), and it's extremely well thought out all around. I wonder what
happened internally to make those kind of designs go bye-bye? I keep wondering
if they had one or two chief set architects who sat around and thought about
authentic-looking and -feeling things...and where they went after BT-I (or what
horrible accident impaired them--too much ABS in the bloodstream? If yes, we're
all doomed. Doomed, I tell you).
My three favourite ships are still Galaxy Explorer, Blacktron I Invader, and the
new entry and new leader (for me), CFV--all for the same reason, really. (I
never owned a BT-I Renegade, so I plead ignorance of its charms.)

Thanks! Yup I tend to paint (nothing on that fighter though), but only things
that don't normally come in the colors I want. And they look good. I use
model paint because it looks authentic, but on the big one I used Partha
paints cause they're cheap, easy, non permanent and look okay for the camera.
On the big ship though I only painted the bottom of the nacelles, mainly
because it might look funny if they were brown. :)

I love the ship because it's one of the few big Lego ships, and I don't mean
big with a bunch of weird things hanging off, it's just big. You can carry
cargo around in it, troops, anything you want. It has real storage space.
Lego tends to not make things with storage space anymore. The reason I wanted
to expand it was because I wanted a ship with a real cargo bay, and even more
storage. None of the new Lego space designs look like they could be used for
deep space exploration. Or maybe I just like big ships, some kind of an ego
thing...he he he... One thing that I eventually want to try making is a model
of the oil rig in the movie The Abyss, that thing was like a space station on
wheels.
