Hotel Information Needed Now for TEXLUG Event

You Houston folks please pay heed:

We Texas residents outside the city of Houston need some information
concerning hotels nearest the site where we are having our weekend meeting.

Preferably, a single post or an update to the TEXLUG site detailing
information such as:

- Hotel Name(s)
- Address
- Area Code and Phone Number

would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure we individuals in Austin, College Station, Dallas/FW and San
Antonio can take it from there.

I start my new job on Tuesday, February 18, 2003, so my much-revered but
low-paying 22-month vacation is rapidly drawing to a close. Hence, I will
likely not have the time or presence of mind to think about requesting this
information when I rejoin the rat-race.

Your fellow Texicans appreciate your undying efforts on our behalf.

With all humility,

Pat

Hey, no harm in asking...again. Your words seem to brim with annoyance, as
if I was little junior interrupting Daddy's big meeting. Make no mistake; I
have been patient since January 23 when I stuck my neck out and asked this
question, which at first didn't seem like a high-tension issue, but then
again I don't live in Houston.

When I initially put forth this question, the meeting was originally
scheduled for March 1 and was five weeks away. The meeting is now scheduled
for March 15 and is less than four weeks away. Please excuse me for
requesting some kind of update after over three weeks of non-news.

See, here's my basic concern (and BTW, I speak only for myself); the area
around NASA in Houston is a major business center. Hence, it is reasonable
to assume that the availability of quality (m/h)otel rooms in that area
becomes lower as the interval between the time one makes a reservation and
the time one actually checks in grows shorter.

Hell, just provide the address of the place we're going to meet; that's all.
I fully and genuinely understand if folks are too busy with work and family
to provide information to the group on a regular basis. As a person with
only one of these things to worry about, I can use my trusty Rand-McNally
map of Houston and the Internet to get local hotel info with just the
address of our meeting place. I can then post this info to the group. I'm
offering my assistance if you will have it...the whole thing should take me
less than a day to research.

Okay, I'm going to side with Pat and ask why can't we just get the address
for the meeting place for now?  There's been plenty of time to provide that
information.  I emailed Chris telling him that we were after some
information when Pat first posted his request (4 days ago).  There hasn't
been any reply except to "be patient".  How many days doesn it take to get
an address?  All we want is a location so we can make reservations ahead of
time.  Is that too much to ask?  I offered to help out in getting this
information to the members, but I've heard nothing.  Come on people!  This
doesn't look good!  There are people more than willing to help out if need
be.  Let's get something going...please!

My apologies for this taking so long. Unfortunatly, Chris is the only one
who knows this information. You have posted here requesting it, and I have
emailed him with the same requests.

I'm sorry for sounding rude or inconsiderate, but I'm afraid the only advice
I can give is to "be patient". Other than frequent emails, I don't think
there is much else I, or anyone else, can do.

Chris contacted me a few days ago saying that he'd have meeting details and
hotel information ready for us very soon. I again contacted him yesterday
and asked only for an address. I've not heard anything from him.

Sorry everyone, I appreciate your urgency and concern.

thanks,
TJ

Hey TJ,
I don't think anyone is blaming you!  There's no need to apologize.  We're
just trying to prod Chris into getting on the ball.  I know how easy it is
to be caught up other things and to put off things that don't fit high on
your priority list.  Heck, half my family does that and it drives me crazy! haha
I've just found that if you sound desperate enough or threaten enough, you
can sometimes prod them into action!  That's all I'm trying to do.

If I lived in the area and had a place to stay, then I probably wouldn't
have it very high on my list either!  While I'm sure there is still plenty
of time, there are some of us who would like to get our plans laid out well
in advance!  I hate worrying about stuff like this at the last minute!

So Chris, if you are reading this... there are some of us who don't have
families or a social life (haha..not me of course!) and we want some
information!  And "no", we won't go peacefully! lol
regards..

Er...yeah, what Tom said.

No, no, TJ...if I had meant "rude" I would have said "TJ, you are being
rude" or some facsimile thereof. I did feel like us anxious, paranoid folks
were being given the runaround...but not the deliberate kind, more like the
"Hey I've enough of my own problems right now" kind. As I said, I really do
understand if folks have enough to do without bothering with this matter.
That's why I offered my assistance...and it is forthcoming.

The next post of mine should expand on Anthony's information, provided I do
my homework right.

(PAGE 2)

I knew it! It always happens. Post something, check back once a night for
about three or four nights, give up, check back in a week, and there's a
whole exchange of messages waiting to be read. Honestly, I can't leave you
kids alone for a second...

Be looking for the information post...Hope a Houstonite (?Houstonian) will
confirm it when it appears.

And now you know...the rest of the story.

I hate feeling of helplessness as we wait for Chris to get back to us. So,
perhaps this helps, or perhaps not, but Chris did say this in the beginning:

" It is about 5 miles from NASA and the Visitor's Center.  5 miles away from
the Kemah Boardwalk.  20+ minutes to downtown Houston.  30 minutes from
Galveston and the Moody Gardens.  Several nice and standard Hotels in the area"

Check this out:

Looks like Nasa (they gray area on the map) and Kemah (the dot marked
"Kemah") are about 5 miles apart. The 77058 zip code (Nasa area) is roughly
31.5 miles from Galveston. Therefore, my amazing powers of deduction (total
sarcasm) tell me that the Meeting Place is somewhere slightly south of the bay.

Anyways, I'd guess that a hotel close to the Space Center would probably do
you good.

My apologies, again. I'm afraid that's all the information I can squeeze out
of the situation.

I know nothing of where the meeting is, but I can add my two cents.

Where Space Center Blvd. and Nasa Road 1 (also known as 528) intersect is the
Hilton now made famous by a certain woman, certain cheating man, and a certain
Mercedes.

Further west on Nasa Road 1 is a Holiday Inn (I think it's a Holiday Inn) as
well as an extended stay place right across the street from Space Center
Houston.

Futher east on Nasa Road 1, very close to my subdivision (El Lago) is a Holiday
Inn Express.

I'm sure there are plenty of boarding (albeit expensive) near Landry-Land (the
Kemah Boardwalk).

There is a Motel 6 and a Ho-Jo's Jr. in Webster.

There is a La Quinta Inn in La Porte (off 146, just north off the map)

There is also an extended stay place near Bay Area Blvd and Space Center Blvd.

All of these places are less than 20 minutes from me.  I'm sure there are more
but that's all I can think of.
If the meeting is held on a weekend that I am available (I won't be available
on March 9th) I'd be happy to show people around the area.

To tell the truth I'm rather anxious to introduce my fellow TEXLUGgers to a
local burger joint called Tookies.  Tookies arguably makes the best hamburgers
and onion rings in the country.  And their prices aren't all that bad either.
I'd be more than happy to lead you all to it (or go there by myself if need
be ;).

The meeting should be the weekend of March 15th. Chris knows this and has
been talking to people at his church about it. (as far as I know). Anyway,
the 15th is the plan! :-)

Hey Anthony,
They wouldn't happen to have a "veggie" burger by any chance?  Otherwise, I
may have to make my own expedition to another spot or order out! :P
not to be taken too seriously..

Hehe... well, the DO actually server a 'meatless' hamburger.  Literally.  It's
a hambuger, all the fixins, sans meat patty.  They also serve a few
non-hamburger entres, but I've never had any of them, nor can I remember off
the top of my head what they are.

My favorite and personal recomendation is what they call the #99 (a double 99
is called the 198, imagine that ;).  Before cooking, the meat is marinated in
white wine, onions and cheese.  MMmmmmmm....

Another good one is the Squealer (a double squealer is a piggyback) which is a
burger with bacon ground up and mixed with the ground chuck before cooking.
