Take a look at all the great MOCs at the meeting:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=13395

The meeting was a great success. I think everyone had a great time and
enjoyed the gathering.

We met on Saturday at Jason's house in Austin. We started at 10am and stayed
until after 6pm.

We had a good time playing with the trains and looking at everyone else's
MOCs. Everyone did an excellent job with their MOCs and showed off their
excellent building abilities.

LIST OF ATTENDEES:
(13 total)
TJ Avery
Indranil Basak
Mr&Mrs Leonard Erlandson
Shawn Gibson
Laura Hayden
Pat Hough
Tom Reed
Tim Rueger
Anthony Sava and fiance (Christina)
Jason Spangler
Bill Swanberg
John Voltin

MOC CONTEST RESULTS:
first place: Laura's Cathedral
second place: Anthony's Griffon
third place: Tom's Fantasy Train

NOTABLE MOCS:
Laura: Norman Era Cathedral and village
Anthony: Griffon, castle, green scorpion dragon, nightmare
Tom: Fantasy train, black ship (pirate, death, death-pirate???), pirate
outpost, black futuristic loco, boxcar
Erlandsons: Red loco and blue boxcar
Shawn: ICL building, unnamed white building ;-), red "tycoon's" car
Pat: massive space ship, 2 buildings
Tim: Mindstorms controlled RR crossing
Jason: blue house w/ yellow trim and sloped roof
Bill: Santa Fe B unit (and nearly a mile of track!)
TJ: 3 bridges, row buildings, U.P. loco, 4 freight cars
(if I've left anyone out, or mislabelled anything, please let me know!)

SOME ACTIVITIES:
(Please reply with more if you can, I know I didn't get everything here.)
The train layout was just for fun and to get an idea of how much train stuff
we had as a group.

We started by laying out a huge double oval in Jason's den. From there we
added sidings and integrated buildings and bridges.

We ran various train combinations around the tracks and bridges, and we
found out the hard way which train cars didn't fit through the bridges.

Throughout the day we rearranged cars and locos, added sidings, added
buildings and created small sections of towns. Tim and I built a small
elevated oval that crossed over the main ovals.

Anthony posed his green dragon in various pictures and let his griffon
attack Laura's cathedral. Needless to say there were many unique picture
taking opportunities.

Indranil showed off his 12v trains which were quite interesting. Most of us
have never seen the old 12v's.

There were a few derailments and other crashes, but nothing serious. No one
was crazy enough to stage a head-on or other catastrophe. We managed to shut
down a controller by running 4 locos for an extended time.

Pat brought his huge blue container of parts (sorted this time!), but the
trading activity was much less at this meeting. I guess everyone focused on
building MOCs and bringing them to the meeting.

We mostly sat around and talked about Lego while watching the trains. It was
great spending a whole Saturday with other AFOLs and sharing our common
interest in Lego.

SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO:

Jason: for hosting the meeting and providing a meeting place (thanks to his
wife too! Although she wasn't there, I'm sure she had a part in the decision
to allow their house to be invaded!)

Laura: for helping with the meeting coordination, making sure we all had
enough to eat, and helping me with the MOC contest voting.

Those who paid for the pizza and did not demand to be paid back. Perhaps
those who didn't pay can pick up the bill at the next meeting.

Those who brought food, drinks, and snacks.

Pat: for updating and maintaining our website:
http://home.earthlink.net/~houghpt/default.htm

AND FINALLY:

I think having a train layout is a good way to bring all of us together. We
all had a great time with it, and all of us contributed to it, in one way or
another. It was a blend of town (past, present, and future), fantasy,
Technic, and robotics (Mindstorms).

I'm sorry if you were unable to attend, but we'll have another meeting again
in the near future. Keep an eye on the TEXLUG newsgroup!

I know I did!  Christina says she did too, but I know whether she did or not
she'd say that ;)

MOC CONTEST RESULTS:

third place: Tom's Fantasy Train

Lobot rocks! :)

SOME ACTIVITIES:
(Please reply with more if you can, I know I didn't get everything here.)
The train layout was just for fun and to get an idea of how much train stuff
we had as a group.

But was an important introduction into the world of lego trains for those who
were unfamiliar.

Anthony posed his green dragon in various pictures and let his griffon
attack Laura's cathedral. Needless to say there were many unique picture
taking opportunities.

I'd like to point out that the Griffon won and moved on to my castle... ;)

There were a few derailments and other crashes, but nothing serious. No one
was crazy enough to stage a head-on or other catastrophe. We managed to shut
down a controller by running 4 locos for an extended time.

Can we try head-ons and other catastrophes next time? :)  j/k

Pat brought his huge blue container of parts (sorted this time!), but the
trading activity was much less at this meeting. I guess everyone focused on

Sorry Pat, maybe next time you won't have so much to lug (no pun intended) back
to your car.

We mostly sat around and talked about Lego while watching the trains. It was
great spending a whole Saturday with other AFOLs and sharing our common
interest in Lego.

I second that!

SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO:

Jason: for hosting the meeting and providing a meeting place (thanks to his
wife too! Although she wasn't there, I'm sure she had a part in the decision
to allow their house to be invaded!)

Let us hope that we left their house just as we found it, if not in better
shape.

Laura: for helping with the meeting coordination, making sure we all had
enough to eat, and helping me with the MOC contest voting.

If chads were involved, I want a recount!  Well, ok, nah.  :)

Those who paid for the pizza and did not demand to be paid back. Perhaps
those who didn't pay can pick up the bill at the next meeting.

I'll be the first to put my money down on the counter next time.  (providing I
can actually get there when the meeting starts)

Those who brought food, drinks, and snacks.

Pat: for updating and maintaining our website:
http://home.earthlink.net/~houghpt/default.htm

Especially now that we know when the next Brickfest will be.  We should lock
down some plans to go.  I'm gonna try my hardest to go, with TEXLug or not, but
if I get a job (as I am attempting to graduate this summer) I may or may not
get off work.  I just don't know yet.

In any case, I had fun this time, and I know I'll have fun the next.  See ya'll
then!

The train layout was just for fun and to get an idea of how much train stuff
we had as a group.
It was my first time seeing a lego train layout in person.  It was way too
cool!  I'm trying hard to not become a train-head, but I can see the appeal!

We started by laying out a huge double oval in Jason's den. From there we
added sidings and integrated buildings and bridges.

We ran various train combinations around the tracks and bridges, and we
found out the hard way which train cars didn't fit through the bridges.
Unfortunately, that applied to most of my cars.  But the bridges were great!
I just wished I could have planned for the clearance.

Throughout the day we rearranged cars and locos, added sidings, added

elevated oval that crossed over the main ovals.

Anthony posed his green dragon in various pictures and let his griffon
attack Laura's cathedral. Needless to say there were many unique picture
taking opportunities.
The Griffon attacking the cathedral was brilliant!  A perfect combination!
It almost looked like it was meant to be that way!

Indranil showed off his 12v trains which were quite interesting. Most of us
have never seen the old 12v's.
Yes, those were very interesting!  It was a very enlightening experience for
us "non-train heads"! hehheh

There were a few derailments and other crashes, but nothing serious. No one

An extra "Thanks" for letting us invade your abode!  I hope the damage was
minimal!  Your hospitality was most welcome!

Laura: for helping with the meeting coordination, making sure we all had
enough to eat, and helping me with the MOC contest voting.
Thanks to you too TJ!  Both of you were instrumental in getting these
meetings off the ground!

Also a "big" thanks to Tim and Bill for bringing all that track and the
train stuff!  There was no way we would have had such a great layout without
their contribution.  I'm still in awe of the amount of track those guys had
with them.  I hope to see them at the next meeting.  They were great
additions to the group!
Those who paid for the pizza and did not demand to be paid back. Perhaps
those who didn't pay can pick up the bill at the next meeting.

Ha! I though I was being conservative in my bridge design. I allowed for
8-wide cars and a 14 brick-height vertical clearance. It turns out that was
nearly the minimum needed. I goofed when I built my tank car too tall.

The next time I'll try and let everyone know, and I'll most definitely build
more clearance into my bridges.

The bridges were plenty wide.  The boxcar my wife built was just too wide in
design.  She's working on a redesign right now that I think will be much more
visually pleasing and a bit narrower.  I'm also working on my engine, but I'm
afraid it will always have those side clearance problems at corners and toss
signs across the room.

For next time I plan on making an engine designed for a head-on collision.
I'll make sure it flies apart in a dramatic way and snaps back together easily
for another run!  Anybody else interested?

Okay Leonard,
When TJ wrote Mr and Mrs Leonard I forgave him for not
knowing your wife's name (because I managed to forget
it, too).  You should use it, though.  She is as
valuable a member of Texlug as you (even more so,
because she is a woman).  So please keep me in
suspense no longer and give her my apologies for not
remembering.

What is her name?

Her name is . . . Margaret.  I'm used to saying "my wife" becuase I'm used to
posting to groups who haven't met her.  I'll refer to her as Margaret from now
on.  You, however, can refer to her however you like, but I would suggest
either Margaret or "Your Highness".

I don't mean to "butt" into y'alls group, but I was wondering how you plan
on running two trains so that they can hit head-on? You can't do that with
the standard out of the box LEGO train system. Are you (or have you)
converted your trains to another control method, such as DCC?

I believe that we were considering using some cross pieces in our layout.  I
admit to using the "head-on" term incorrectly for dramatic purpose.  One train
would run into the side of another.

how can you alter the direction of a train motor? Can you modify the motor
or controller?

It is my experience that all of the train motors are directional. I
frequently use 2 motors per train and if you don't get them both going the
same direction, well, the train won't go anywhere. I usually look on the
bottom of the motors and and make sure the LEGO trademark's are going on the
same direction. In this case, make sure they are opposite of one another and
you should be able to get a nice head on crash.

Hate to disagree with you Robert, but the LEGO train motors don't work that
way. It doesn't matter which way you put them on the track, they will all
travel in the same direction. You can not run to motors on the same loop of
track in opposite directions.

I thought he was kidding;-)

*Unless* you have altered them by adding a DCC chip, in which case you could.

Well yes that's true, or you could just open the motor and reverse some of
the wiring inside so that the motor runs the opposite direction of a stock
motor, but I really doubt it would be worth the effort.

If you really want to crash them, just put in a cross track....and wait for
the right moment. :)

What is her name?

Her name is . . . Margaret.  I'll refer to her as Margaret from now
on.  You, however, can refer to her however you like, but I would suggest
either Margaret or "Your Highness".

Makes perfect sense since "Margaret" IS Greek for "Your Highness".
