I believe the suggestion was that, when someone posts a friendly question
about, for example, brown bricks...
http://news.lugnet.com/lego/direct/?n=1512
...that if there was some reason LD knew the answer but couldn't say, it
would be nice to dignify the question with some answer (rather than ignoring
it, intentionally or unintentionally), even if that answer is simply to say
that LD couldn't say. (Key difference here being saying you can't say vs.
saying you're working on it.)
I think saying "We are working on it" is definitely a risky thing to say,
but I don't think I heard that suggested -- unless TLC really is working
on it, in which case, depending on circumstances, LD could certainly say,
"We are working on it, but don't ask when it'll be finished -- we can't say."
I understand what you are saying about there being no correct answer.
That's what makes coming up with an answer challenging. :-) But over time,
you would build up a collection of stock answers to questions like that.
Or you could make a FAQ.

Jake, did anyone ever suggest that there be official congratulations for
*every* posting in the media? (Or are you exaggerating for the sake of
making a point?)
I simply said that I found it puzzling that LUGNET, De Bouwsteen, and
DixieLUG were covered in the LA Times and that we received a fax photocopy
in the mail from and some kind words from a LEGO employee in Enfield, yet
no official congrats or acknowledgment of any kind from LD, not through
email, not publicly.
The LA Times article was very upbeat, very positive for all parties.
To clarify... What I found puzzling is it was an employee in Enfield who
interfaced with the community about it, rather than LD, which is part of
LD's mission.

Of course. Who wouldn't? :-)

Just to clarify, the article (entitled "LEGO Enthusiasts are Building
Connections Online, Brick by Brick") was a dedicated article about the
online LEGO community -- the first in a new, ongoing series in the LA Times
about online communities. It's also the first article in the press that
I'm aware of that specifically acknowledges the online community as such.
(Most typical press coverage talks about, say, a few people and the things
they've built, rather than the whole community.)
If you don't feel that's noteworthy, I understand, but it still seems to me
like a big step for TLC to get this kind of recognition in the press.

It doesn't show that at all. It shows concern. And a lot of people *are*
worried that TLC is spreading itself too thin. (BTW, that quote appeared
in the UK Guardian Unlimited article -- different from the LA Times article.
I agree with the implication that the UK Guardian Unlimited article failed
to flatter TLC.)
